Studies show that diet changes (Medical Nutrition Therapy)can play a significant role in slowing the rate of progression of advanced kidney disease. There are 5 stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) based on Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR).
Stage 1: GFR greater than 90 Slight kidney damage with normal GFR
Stage 2: GFR 60 – 89 Mild decrease in kidney function
Stage 3: GFR 30 – 59 Moderate decrease in kidney function
Stage 4: GFR 15 – 29 Severe decrease in kidney function
Stage 5: GFR less than 15 Kidney failure, Dialysis or Transplant necessary
